Once a drilling fluid proves itself in certain types of wells, it becomes an industry standard. For many operators, such a proven fluid is “good enough.” They stick with it, even when they drill new kinds of formations – such as undersaturated reservoirs and coal bed methane – or after drilling conditions change due to depletion, invasion or another factor.

As long as a fluid works most of the time, on most wells, operators prefer it to a new solution. If the new fluid fails, they’re responsible. This risk aversion even carries over to the application of old fluids on new wells.
